Senior Care Aide Description

Senior Care Aides help the elderly with their wide range of medical and physical needs. Senior Care Aides provide assistance on a temporary or full-time basis, depending on the Senior’s specific life situation.

Home Health Aides (HHAs) or Personal Care Aides (PCAs) help Seniors (and others) who are disabled, chronically ill, or cognitively impaired. Home Health Aides assist Seniors with their personal, physical mobility, and therapeutic care needs. Generally, care is provided according to plans established by a doctor, rehabilitation health practitioner, social worker, or other health care professional.

In particular, an HHA helps the Senior with mobility-restricted activities, such as getting out of bed, bathing, dressing, and grooming. The Home Health Aide also reminds a Senior when to take his or her medication, and the Aide can check the Senior’s vital signs under the direction of a nurse or other healthcare practitioner. A Senior Care Aide may be responsible for advising the patient and the patient’s family on nutrition, cleanliness, and household tasks. Depending on the Senior’s needs, the Care Aide may change simple dressings, provide skin care, and more.

In addition to meeting the Senior’s home health needs, a Senior Aide may accompany the Senior to the doctor or on other errands. And, the Aide may perform light housekeeping and other home care duties such as basic maintenance and lawn care.

Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs) work under the guidance of a Registered Nurse (RN) or a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) to offer basic help to Seniors and other patients. CNA’s offer many of the services that Home Health Aides provide (see above) and more. A Certified Nursing Assistant stays in close company with their Senior and looks after his or her grooming, bathing, and feeding.

Typical job duties include serving meals, making beds, emptying bed pans, and helping patients to dress and bathe. In addition, CNAs assist nurses with necessary medical equipment, and they note down patient vitals and report them to nurses. As is the case with Home Health Aides, one of the Certified Nursing Assistant’s most important roles is offering emotional support to the Senior for whom they’re caring.

Salary for a Senior Care Professional depends on your location, the particular job requirements, as well as the level of experience of the Senior Care Applicant. Benefits, perks, and other forms of compensation provided by the Employer also affect salary requirements.
