Companion / Personal Care Aide Description

A Companion / Personal Care Aide or Personal Care Assistant (PCA) helps those who are disabled or chronically ill with their daily living activities.  Personal Care Aides assist Clients with their personal, physical mobility, and therapeutic care needs.  Typically care is provided as per plans established by a doctor, rehabilitation health practitioner, social worker, or other health care professional.

In particular, a Companion / Personal Care Aide helps his or her Employer with mobility restricted activities, such as getting out of bed, bathing, dressing, and grooming.  The Personal Care Assistant also may provide some basic health-related services, such as checking the patient’s pulse rate, temperature, and respiration rate; helping with simple prescribed exercises; and reminding the Employer to take his or her medication.

A Personal Care Assistant may also be responsible for advising patients and their families on nutrition, cleanliness, and household tasks. Depending on Employer needs, the Aide may change simple dressings, provide skin care, and more. A Companion may also accompany his or her Employer to the doctor or on other errands, and the Aide may perform light housekeeping and homemaking duties.

Salary for a Companion / Personal Care Aide position depends on your location, the particular job requirements, and the level of experience of the Personal Care Applicant.  Benefits, perks, and other forms of compensation provided by the Employer also affect salary requirements.
